Dust emissivity in resolved spiral galaxies

چکیده

Context. The far-infrared (FIR) and sub-millimeter (submm) emissivity, ϵ ν , of the Milky Way (MW) cirrus is an important benchmark for dust grain models. Dust masses in other galaxies are generally derived from FIR/submm using emission properties these MW-calibrated Aims. We seek to derive nine nearby spiral check its compatibility with MW measurements. Methods. obtained values at 70–500 μm, maps Herschel satellite gas surface density THINGS HERACLES surveys on a scale corresponding 440 pc. studied variation brightness ratio I (250 μm)/ (500 μm), proxy intensity interstellar radiation field heating dust. Results. find that average value agrees estimates pixels sharing same color as cirrus, namely, μm)=4.5. For μm)> 5, measured emissivity instead up factor ∼2 lower than predicted models heated by stronger fields. Regions higher μm) preferentially closer galactic center have overall (stellar+gas) molecular fraction. results do not depend strongly adopted CO-to-molecular conversion appear be affected mixing conditions. Conclusions. Our confirm validity low density, but odds predictions evolution environments. If lower-than-expected high result intrinsic variations properties, it would imply underestimation mass when current

The emissivity of dust grains in spiral galaxies

We use the radiation transfer simulation of Xilouris et al. (1999) to constrain the quantity of dust in three nearby spiral galaxies (NGC 4013, NGC 5907 and NGC 4565). The predicted visual optical depth from the model is compared with the thermal continuum radiation detected from NGC 4013 and NGC 5907 at 850 μm and from NGC 4565 at 1.2 mm. The former is based on SCUBA images of NGC 4013 and NGC...

Resolved Atomic Super-clouds in Spiral Galaxies

High quality data are presented of neutral hydrogen emission and absorption in the fields of eleven of the nearest spiral galaxies. Multi-configuration VLA observations have provided angular resolution of 6 arcsec (corresponding to about 100 pc at the average galaxy distance of 3.5 Mpc) and velocity resolution of 6 km s, while accurately recovering the total line flux detected previously with f...

Radial transport of dust in spiral galaxies

Motivated by recent observations which detect dust at large galactocentric distances in the disks of spiral galaxies, we propose a mechanism of outward radial transport of dust by spiral stellar density waves. We consider spiral galaxies in which most of dust formation is localized inside the corotation radius. We show that in the disks of such spiral galaxies, the dust grains can travel over r...

Dust in spiral galaxies: global properties

We present and analyse high-quality SCUBA 850and 450-μm images of 14 local spiral galaxies, including the detection of dust well out into the extended disk in many cases. We use these data in conjunction with published far-infrared flux densities from IRAS and ISO, and millimetre-wave measurements from ground-based facilities to deduce the global properties of the dust in these galaxies; in par...

Radial distribution of gas and dust in spiral galaxies *

By combining Herschel-SPIRE data with archival Spitzer, H i , and CO maps, we investigate the spatial distribution of gas and dust in the two famous grand-design spirals M 99 and M 100 in the Virgo cluster. Thanks to the unique resolution and sensitivity of the Herschel-SPIRE photometer, we are for the first time able to measure the distribution and extent of cool, submillimetre (submm)-emittin...
